Nancy created this artwork several years ago. She calls it, ‘Jesus’ Back.’ It’s a rear view of Jesus’ shredded, bruised, and bloodied body pressed against the cross. What we cannot see are the splinters, like merciless needles, piercing His flesh as His back rubbed against the rugged cross.
At any time during His
crucifixion, Jesus could have called 12 legions of angels – 72,000 mighty
angelic warriors, their glistening swords unsheathed – to rescue Him and decimate
the blood-thirsty mob at the foot of that cross.
But He didn’t call
them.
He determined to drink
the cup of suffering in fullest measure. Why? It was the only way to become our
substitutionary sacrifice. It was the only way for Him to rescue us from
God’s wrath and save us from the eternal consequences of our sins.
And so, He stayed on
that torturous wood until He said it was finished.
Oh! What will you and I
do with such a Savior? What will we do?
We will either ignore
Him; Or we will make Him our Lord.
He gives us only those two choices.
