Is God good all the time and in all circumstances? Or is He good only most of the time and in most circumstances? If the latter is true, then how can we every really trust Him? If the former is true, then trusting Him is as natural as breathing.
St. Therese of Lisieux accepted the first premise, which is why she wrote:
"Everything is a grace, everything is the direct effect of our father's love — difficulties, contradictions, humiliations, all the soul's miseries, her burdens, her needs — everything, because through them, she learns humility, realizes her weakness — Everything is a grace because everything is God's gift. Whatever be the character of life or its unexpected events — to the heart that loves, all is well."
I wonder which premise I really accept.

I truly believe that God is good always. It took me some time to arrive at that conclusion, but it is an unshakable belief to me now. There are times that I can't see the "good" in a particular situaion, but I have faith in a God who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The God who created the universe is still a Creator, and he is able to make something good out of even the "bad" circumstances that come our way from time to time.
