Americans
celebrate Independence Day because on this day in 1776, a small cadre
of men rose up against a despotic king to demand their freedom. They are
called Patriots.
But
even on this Independence Day in 2022, there are who rise up against
another King – this one a benevolent King, a gracious, loving,
self-sacrificial King. They rise up demanding their freedom to do as
they choose when they choose and with whom they choose. They are called
variety of names: Atheists. Agnostics. Humanists. Skeptics. Pagans. Some
prefer other names, but you get the point. They are those who love to
live as the rebels of the dark years of the Judges wherein: “Every man
did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 17:6; 21:25)
However,
such independence seekers are not only outside the Church. We find them
in pews and pulpits everywhere, those of whom St. Paul wrote: “They
profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable
and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.” (Titus 1:16)
So, the point on this Independence Day, 2022?
Christian!
You who want to be faithful followers of Christ. You who want to live
according to His commandments – let us all on this Independence Day, in
the pews and in the pulpits, renew our allegiance to the King of heaven
and earth. We know there can never be true freedom without submission to
His Kingship.
None.
