When God Makes a Promise . . . .

Today is the first day of Advent, the time when many Christians focus on Christ’s first coming – the advent which God promised the world since the days of Genesis.

It was there, in the third chapter of that book, God promised Satan – I think it was more a threat than a promise – “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike a fatal blow to your head, while you merely bruise His heel” (My paraphrase of Genesis 3:15).

As Jesus slowly died on Golgotha’s cross, Satan thought he’d dealt a fatal blow to God’s Son. But three days later the gates of hell themselves trembled with the realization he’d only bruised Him. Every demon in hell – including Satan – fell to their knees in unrelenting horror as they witnessed Jesus, God’s anointed One, deal a fatal blow to the Serpent’s head.

When God makes a promise, He always, always, always brings it to pass. Which is why, because He was faithful about the first advent, we have confidence He will bring to pass the second.

Some say Christians are a ‘pie in the sky’ people – trusting in empty myths. Oh, but on the contrary, we are a people who trust God to be as true to His future promises as He has always been in the past.

Maranatha, Lord Jesus. We joyously await your return.
