I posted some thoughts the other day about two memory texts I’d pulled at random from my stack of cards. Today, as I continued to review them, this text from Jeremiah 6:16 stood out to me – probably because of recent conversations I’ve had online with some who have the strangest ideas about what the Bible teaches concerning sin, heaven, and hell.
“Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls.”
The Holy Spirit then immediately directed my thoughts to Proverbs 22:28, “Do not move the ancient boundary which your fathers have set.” In other words, don’t mess with the Scriptures, the ancient paths, the narrow way God laid before us that leads to the small gate into heaven. As Jesus said, only a few find that path – probably because the broad way is so much easier. (See Matthew 7:13-14)
Please, hear this! God gave us ancient paths and ancient boundaries for our safety. For our protection. A storm is coming to each of us. It may be soon. It may be distant. But it is a ravaging storm. A storm like the one Jesus spoke of, saying:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
Christian, please stay on the ancient paths. Don’t move them to accommodate your life-journey. Those paths are the ONLY way to find rest for your soul in the midst of the storm.
And to you who are not yet a Christian, you will find the ancient paths between the covers of your Bible. Don’t move them to accommodate your life-journey. Those paths are the only way to find rest for your soul in the midst of the storm.
